Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a complex chronic health issue that involves the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) as well as teeth, the jaw, the tongue and muscles of the head, face and neck. The problem may even include associated pain with the lower back and extremities.
The temporomandibular joints are ball and socket joints located bilaterally where the condyle (joint) of the mandible (lower jaw) meets the temporal bone.
Trauma to these joints may cause inflammation resulting in acute or chronic pain. Trauma may be the result of an accident (ie. a motor vehicle accident), clenching and/or grinding of your teeth, orthodontics or an imbalance in your bite.
The pain associated with TMD includes headaches, facial pain, neck pain, myofacial pain or even referred pain (pain in a separate area from the source of the problem).
A large population of patients experience TMJ and headaches due to a dental force imbalance (imbalance in the dental foundation). Some patients are unable to adapt to the imbalance. This inability to adapt to some physiologic range activates the compensatory mechanism to avoid the imbalance. This results in over-contraction of certain muscle groups resulting in painful muscles, headaches and migraines. This may produce trigger points that refer the pain to other parts of the head and neck. These chronic symptoms of pain will create acceleration in aging.
In male patients we will see severe wear of their teeth due to more muscular resistance but in women we will see more trauma to the muscles accounting for more women complaining of TMJ pain, headaches and/or migraines.
At the Julian Center we have a very comprehensive program including an extensive evaluation followed by a treatment plan consultation to discuss a path of treatment in your best interest.
The treatment will consist of a very comprehensive rehabilitation program to reduce the inflammation and spasms in your muscles as well as establishing a sound dental foundation. Also included is a nutrition and diet program as well as lifestyle coaching so you may live a more productive life without the debilitation of chronic facial pain, TMJ, headaches or migraines.
